A dark olive-brown wool shot through with a fine chalk pinstripe — the kind of cloth that photographs as charcoal until the light hits it. The Story

Alexandre was a British multiple tailor — one of the postwar names that brought made-to-measure-quality construction to the high street, “exclusive tailoring” as the woven crest label puts it, made in England. The pleated front, the lined waistband, and the welt back pocket with its button are the grammar of a proper English trouser rather than a fused, throwaway one. Wool, not polyester — the outlier on this rack, and the better-built one.
