The Piece
Before J.C. Penney became a mall anchor selling khakis to dads, they had Towncraft — and Towncraft Plus was the premium line. This board shirt is from the late 1950s or early 1960s, made in Japan during that brief window when Japanese mills were producing exceptional wool flannels for American labels. The plaid is a deep teal-blue with grey and cream accents, the kind of moody color palette that looks like the Pacific Northwest in winter. 95% wool, 5% nylon for durability, in a weight that sits right between shirt and jacket.
Details
Classic board shirt silhouette with loop/camp collar. Two chest pockets with button-down flaps. Button-front closure. Fully lined in dark navy. Tagged M-15-15½ (neck sizing). Made in Japan for Penneys. The WPL 11935 number dates this to the Penneys era, pre-JCPenney rebrand. Hand washable per the label.
Condition
Good vintage condition for a 60+ year old garment. There is a small hole visible on the front panel near the button placket — likely a moth nick. Wool has softened naturally with age. Colors remain deep and rich. No major stains or tears beyond the noted flaw. All buttons present and functional. A collector's piece with honest wear.
